CCM Announces 2013-14 Mainstage Concert Series Schedule

CCM is pleased to announce initial details on its 2013-14 Mainstage Series of concert performances. Encompassing more than 40 different concerts, this series begins with a production of Verdi’s grand opera Don Carlos on Sept. 22 and concludes with the annual concerto competition-winners concert on April 11.

The internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet will present a complete tour of Beethoven’s string quartets as part of CCM’s upcoming season, with six concerts scheduled for January, February and March.

CCM’s 2013-14 concert series also features a rare staged performance of Bach’s St. John Passion presented in conjunction with the Constella Festival of Music and Fine Arts, a year-long Britten Centennial Celebration, a jazz tribute to the Rolling Stones, a concert dedicated to Richard Wagner’s 200th birthday, a performance of John Adams’ opera-oratorio El Niño and much more.

Several popular concert productions are also returning, including the annual Feast of Carols, Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite featuring CCM’s Jazz Ensembles and Musical Theatre Dancers, the annual PRISM concert and the latest installment of Pianopalooza.

New subscription and flex ticket packages go on sale Monday, June 17, 2013. Single tickets go on sale beginning Monday, Sept. 9.

SEPTEMBER

CCM Prestige Event Series

“Verdi’s Don Carlos, Acts I – III”

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth (Oct. 10, 1813), CCM proudly presents the 1867 Paris Opera version of the grand opera Don Carlos in concert. CCM’s Concert Orchestra performs Act I through the first half of Act III of Verdi’s most complete operatic statement at 2 p.m., followed by the Philharmonia performing the second half of Act III through Act V beginning at 7 p.m. This production will be sung in French.

Continuing the celebration of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth 200 years ago (Oct. 10, 1813), CCM concludes the 1867 Paris Opera version of the grand opera Don Carlos in concert. CCM’s Philharmonia, Chamber Choir and Chorale perform the second half of Act III through Act V of Verdi’s most complete operatic statement at 7 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Concert Orchestra will have performed Act I through the first half of Act III  at 2 p.m.This production will be sung in French.

“Wagner – Redemption Through Love”

CCM celebrates the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth (May 22, 1813) with a concert of orchestral selections from Wagner’s operas to be performed with images from Tony Palmer’s film Wagner, starring Richard Burton. Featuring faculty artists Amy Johnson, soprano; Tom Baresel, tenor; and Kenneth Shaw, bass. PLEASE NOTE: The footage from the 1983 film Wagner featured during this concert includes some imagery intended for mature audiences.

Celebrate the kickoff of CCM Dance’s 50th anniversary season with an exciting concert of mixed repertoire. The Fall Dance Showcase features George Balanchine’s masterpiece Serenade set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade in C Major for String Orchestra, Op. 48, staged by one of the pre-eminent authorities on the work of Balanchine: guest répétiteur Joysanne Sidimus. In addition, Assistant Professor Deirdre Carberry restages “The Kingdom of the Shades,” Act II of Petipa’s La Bayadère, to music by Ludwig Minkus. Set in the Royal India of the past, the story of eternal love, vengeance and justice is considered to be one of the most celebrated moments in classical ballet. Finally, Professor Jiang Qi restages Unseen, an exhilarating work by Victoria Morgan, choreographer and artistic director of the Cincinnati Ballet, to Opuses from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words.

CCM Busse Fund Guest Artist Recital

Acclaimed baritone Gerald Finley is perhaps best known for creating the title role in John Adams’ Dr. Atomic, which he has performed in many opera houses since its San Francisco world premiere in 2005, including the Metropolitan Opera, where he has also sung in La bohèmeDon Giovanni and Pelléas et Mélisande, among others. For this guest artist recital, Finley will be accompanied by Julius Drake, an acclaimed artist in his own right who also accompanied tenor Ian Bostridge at his recent CCM recital.

“American Voices XV – John Adams’ El Niño

The most significant American oratorio of the late 20th century, Adams’ El Niño retells the traditional biblical story of the birth of Jesus, incorporating poetry of Rosario Castellanos, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Hildegard von Bingen, Gabriela Mistral, Vicente Huidobro and Rubén Dario, and selected passages from the Wakefield Mystery Plays, Martin Luther’s Christmas Sermon, the Gospel of Luke and several Gnostic Gospels from the Apocrypha.

“In Search of Garaj Mahal”

Segovia meets Paganini in James Brown’s backyard as guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque joins CCM Jazz for a night of groove music infused with classical and world music influences. Haque’s unique style has led to collaborations with Arturo Sandoval, Sting, Keller Williams, and Medeski, Martin and Wood, just to name a few.
